National MOAA Scholarships

To date, the Chapter membership has collectively endowed three Named MOAA Scholarships: the Warren and Nancy Evans Scholarship, the COL Ted Crozier, Sr. Scholarship, and the COL Tom and Freida Borlund Scholarship.

In addition, two other Named MOAA Scholarships are part of our Chapter's Scholarship Program: the Alicia Pontius Scholarship, endowed by Capt Eldon Pontius, USMC (Ret), and the LTC David and Jean Marr Scholarship endowed by LTC David Marr, USA (Ret).

Information about the National MOAA Scholarship Program may be obtained by visiting the National MOAA web site at
http://www.moaa.org/Content/About-MOAA/Scholarship-Fund/Scholarship-Fund.aspx.

The Chapter is not currently soliciting donations to fund another National MOAA Scholarship, but we may do so in the future.
A notice will be provided both here and on the Chapter News page should it become appropriate.

Local JROTC Scholarships

The Chapter annually presents a number of scholarship grants to local-area JROTC students. Best qualified applicants from area high schools are awarded these scholarships to a college of his/her choice. These scholarships are a one-time grant; they cannot be renewed.

Minimum factors for the award of the scholarship are:

  • Must be a JROTC student who has been accepted to a 4-year college or university,
  • Must have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 system,
  • Must be recommended for the award by a faculty member (one page letter),
  • Must be recommended by the Senior JROTC Instructor,
  • Must complete the application form .

Other criteria are evaluated by the Scholarship Selection Committee to determine the selectees. One factor given strong consideration is the applicant's intent to pursue a commission in the military.

The application period opens at the end of each January. Notification is sent to all JROTC units in the area along with applications. Completed applications with all supporting documentation (paper or electronic files) must be submitted to the Scholarship Selection Committee by 1 March. Selectees will be identified in April/May for recognition and award presentation.

To provide funds to support our Scholarship Program, two categories of donation have been established:
  • The Local Scholarship Fund
  • The $250 Club

The former derives funds from direct, occasional donations, typically by Chapter members during monthly membership meetings, and from the net proceeds from an annual Benefit Golf Scramble named in honor of former Chapter member COL Ted A. Crosier, Sr. USA (Ret) who was a vigorous supporter of the Scholarship Program.

The $250 Club is composed of Chapter members who pledge to give at least $250 annually, either in a lump some or in installments throughout the year. It was begun during past efforts to raise funds to endow a national-level Named MOAA Scholarship, mentioned above. However, when such efforts are not underway, $250-Club donations accrue to the Local Scholarship Fund.
